Having a bluetooth keyboard for your Kindle Fire HD can be quite useful. This external keyboard accessory can get you up to typing speed in no time! Before you buy, you should do your research as there are tons of cheaply built, and non-compatible keyboards out there. See the list below to help you decide what characteristics you should consider when shopping for a bluetooth keyboard. See some of my favorites here.
Portability – One thing to consider is where you will use this bluetooth keyboard. Is it something that you will keep in your computer bag and take on the road with you? Or is it something that you will keep on a desk and use as a type of docking station? If its intended use is a travel keyboard, then you really want to look for one that folds up. This not only reduces the size but keeps the keys protected as well. If you are leaning towards more of a docking station you will want one with an integrated holder for your tablet. Hopefully one built especially for the Kindle Fire HD. Make sure you are aware of the size difference in the 7″ and 8.9″ Kindle Fire HD.
Price – For most people this is the #1 factor when deciding which keyboard to purchase. But while it is to be smart with your money, make sure you don’t buy the cheapest one you find. You could easily end up with a low-quality keyboard that will either not work as desired or may even break, which will lead you to have to purchase another one! How much you intend on using this keyboard is also a factor. If you are buying one just to use every now and then, you may be able to get away with a cheaper option.
Integrated Case - If this keyboard is something you will be using all the time, then maybe you want to consider a integrated Kindle Fire case / bluetooth keyboard combo? Two birds, one stone? These cases are usually made pretty generically to fit a range of tablet sizes, so keep checking back for one made specifically for the Kindle Fire HD 7″ or Kindle Fire HD 8.9″. This will also add a little weight to the whole case but if you use the keyboard on a daily basis, then this option may be for you.
Ruggedness – Although this one would be hard to gauge without a hands-on test of the bluetooth keyboard, user reviews will help steer you in the right direction here. This also loosely relates to price. If you are on eBay and see a whole package including a bluetooth keyboard, case, screen protector, wall charger, and car charger for $9.99 then maybe the quality is just a little low?
Use – Different from portability, this attribute relates more on how, and where, you intend to use the keyboard. Are you going to always be using it on a desk or other flat surface? Then maybe a roll-up keyboard will work for you, or one that folds up into the size of a playing card. But if you will be sitting on the couch, in bed, or even in the car (passenger side I hope) then you will want a more rigid keyboard. These bluetooth keyboards are usually one-piece and have less moving parts that can break.
Size – Be careful when buying a keyboard for your Kindle Fire HD online. Make sure you know what size you are getting. Some of the keyboards sold really are meant as “travel” keyboards, they are NOT full-size. If you have smaller fingers and have weighed the benefits of a smaller keyboard, then go ahead. Just make sure you know what size you are getting!
Compatibility – WARNING! you will see alot of articles out there saying that the Kindle Fire is NOT bluetooth compatible. This was true with the original Kindle Fires but the HD versions DO have bluetooth. If you are not sure whether your Kindle Fire has bluetooth, check this guide.
